The third edition of Unmesha – International Literature Festival was held in Patna, Bihar, from 25th to 28th September 2025. The event brought together writers, poets, scholars, and publishers from 15 countries representing over 100 languages. The Vice-President of India, Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan, graced the valedictory session as the Chief Guest during his first visit to Bihar since assuming office. The festival celebrated literature’s role in shaping society and encouraging cultural unity.

Bihar’s Spiritual and Historical Significance
Bihar is recognised as a land of dharma, culture, and knowledge. It is a unique spiritual hub where Buddhist, Jain, and Hindu traditions converge. Bodh Gaya, where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment, is a global symbol of peace and mindfulness. Vaishali, the birthplace of Lord Mahavira, represents the Jain ideals of non-violence and truth. Ancient universities like Nalanda and Vikramshila attracted scholars from across Asia, marking Bihar as an intellectual powerhouse in antiquity.

Political and Social Contributions
Bihar’s historical legacy includes powerful empires such as Magadha and Maurya. It also witnessed the birth of democracy in Vaishali over 2,500 years ago. The state played a vital role in India’s freedom struggle, exemplified by the Champaran Satyagraha led by Mahatma Gandhi. Bihar has produced influential leaders like Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President, and Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan, a key figure in India’s democratic conscience and social reforms.

Cultural Heritage and Festivals
Bihar’s cultural richness is visible in its traditional arts and festivals. Mithila painting is a renowned folk art form. Folk theatre like Bidesia reflects the social life of the region. Chhath Puja, one of the most disciplined and ecologically conscious festivals, honours the Sun god. Devotees worship both the rising and setting sun, denoting the festival’s spiritual and environmental significance.

Unmesha Festival and Literary Diversity
Unmesha symbolises awakening and unfolding new ideas. The festival promotes literary diversity by bringing together voices from across the globe. It serves as a platform to bridge divides of language, culture, and ideology. Organised by Sahitya Akademi with support from the Ministry of Culture and the Bihar government, Unmesha encourages dialogue among writers, translators, and scholars, encouraging a shared understanding and cultural unity under the idea of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.

Notable Visits and Observances
During the visit, the Vice-President paid tribute to Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan at J.P. Golambar in Patna. He also visited Shri Chamunda Devi Mandir in Muzaffarpur, accompanied by state and central dignitaries. A moment of silence was observed at the festival for victims of a tragic incident in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The event reaffirmed Bihar’s continuing role as a centre of culture, knowledge, and social conscience.
